About this Course

When I hire a writer, the first thing I look for is their control over copy.

Can they communicate an idea in its simplest terms? Have they mastered the turn of phrase? If their writing is clever, is it still honoring the business purpose it was born for?

How many voices are in this person’s head?

I look for writers who can move from tone to tone smoothly, delivering a concise message like a friend of the consumer. I like writers who are rocksteady and standard high. I need people who can use a stylish sentence fragment. Like this.

Before I even ask if a writer is a Big Idea Person, I make sure they can handle the basics.

When writers can be counted on to deliver flawless work, their lives are easier and they’re next in line for better opportunities. Clean copy is the most direct path upward.

This course is about the close-up craft of copy. We’ll break down what makes one tone different from another, why communication goes bad, and how to say what you’re saying the first time.

Over the coming weeks, you’ll discover tools to use in the real world. We’ll work through exercises that you will be able to apply to your day-to-day writing, and we’ll start to explore how broad your repertoire really is. At the end of the session, you’ll create new work or polish old work you can put in your book. You’ll also leave more confident in your writing, which will make it a lot more fun.

Whether you’re trying to push into a senior writing position or just break into the business, this kind of discipline is what separates the elite from the also-ran. Great writing will make you stand out.

Meeting Schedule


  • We meet online once a week via video conference.
  • This class meets on Thursdays.
  • We'll meet for a very quick Meet & Greet the week prior to the official class start - and then class begins the following week.
  • We start at 6:30pm Pacific Time. I'll send a link using Google MEET.
  • We will meet for 6 WEEKS - on the same night of the week (Thursdays). Set aside 2 hours for our class meeting although our class may run longer.



I cap this class at 8 students. I think that is the right number to give you a lot of personalized attention - and a small group always helps with ideas.

Each week you'll find lessons to read and assignments on your portal. This is yours forever and you can check back to it anytime.
